SMITHSONIAN JOURNEYS. “So close . . . yet so far away.” That’s exactly what you’ll be saying as you journey through eastern Canada for a fall foliage adventure like you’ve never experienced before. Together with our special travel partner, Smithsonian Journeys, we are featuring just one departure only, September 19-28. This “Canada Maritime Province – A Fall Foliage Voyage Aboard the Clelia II” showcases the best of Canada’s maritime region. Your journey will begin in Toronto where you will board the private yacht-like Clelia II – a stunning 100-guest/50-oceanview suite vessel that features every amenity imaginable. You’ll sail across Lake Ontario, through the spectacular Thousand Islands to the St. Lawrence Seaway and on to Montreal – the second largest French-speaking city in the Western world. Experience firsthand both the city’s Old World charm and its avant-garde innovation as you explore one of North America’s most cosmopolitan cities. Next is historic Quebec City – a UNESCO World Heritage site. From there, you’ll cruise leisurely down the Saguenay River – an important trade route and home to Beluga whales which breed in its cold waters. Next stop is the remote Gaspe Peninsula – site of the National Park of Bonaventure Island – that showcases a magnificent migratory bird sanctuary. Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, is next – and what a charming, colonial seaport it is! Highlights will include a visit to Anne of Green Gables House and viewing some 200 bird species inhabiting the parkland, and all with the stunning backdrop of magnificent autumn colors. From there, you’ll journey to Ingonish, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. A beautiful destination that is even more lovely this time of year, you will visit Cape Breton Highlands National Park and traverse the famed Cabot Trail. Next is Louisbourg – site of Canada’s largest national park and a living museum that recreates 18th century life through interpreters in period costume. And last, you sail to Halifax, where you disembark for your flight home. All in all, this spectacular fall foliage cruise through Canada’s Maritime Provinces will be a journey filled with history, wildlife, magnificent scenery, informative lectures and presentations, wonderful sightseeing, delightful new friends and life-long memories. Dr. Donald G. Shomette, award-winning author and historian and well-known maritime archaeologist, will be your Smithsonian Study Leader for this special maritime journey.
