SMITHSONIAN JOURNEYS. Smithsonian Journeys is featuring “Canadian Adventure by Rail,” and it is just that: An Adventure right across our northern boarder. You will travel west from Toronto to Vancouver aboard historic railways, stay in deluxe hotels and lodges and see and experience the best our neighbor to the north has to offer. Just one itinerary for this summer, this journey takes place August 13-22 and includes such highlights as a grand welcome and sumptuous dinner at the deluxe Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto, two nights each at the world-renowned Jasper Lake Lodge (a “village” of cedar chalets and heritage log cabins) and Banff Springs Hotel, rail travel and overnight accommodations aboard The Canadian, exciting day adventures on the Rocky Mountaineer and a final evening at the historic Hotel Vancouver. Throughout your journey, you will be accompanied by Canadian historian Barry Lane. Sights include the Icefields Parkway, the exciting Spiral Tunnel, the Canadian Shield, Winnipeg, Jasper National Park, Mount Edith Cavell, Banff National Park, Chateau Lake Louise and Kamloops – not to mention the chance to see magnificent wildlife along the railways. Additional sightseeing will be by motorcoach and a scenic boat cruise on Maligne Lake – one of the world’s largest glacier-fed lakes. All meals are included with some evenings as group dinners on the train; other evenings in local restaurants, with a special “festive farewell” dinner planned.
