Beginning with the Gold Rush in the 1850s, the structure that became a 20-room boarding house known as “The Inn” was originally a stagecoach stop on the route from Colorado Springs to Leadville – one of the most famous stagecoach runs of the American West. At its “peak,” tents had to be pitched next to the Inn to accommodate the overflow of guests who ran the gamut from rich capitalists to trappers and hunters. However, by 1876, when the gold strikes played out and travel through the Manitou Springs region dwindled, The Inn struggled to survive. But survive it did! And all because of the discovery and interest in the town’s ancient mineral springs. For hundreds – perhaps thousands – of years, the springs had bubbled up from underground limestone aquifers that carbonated the cool, good-tasting water and infused it with minerals. The rest, as they say, is history.
